Data & automation for small teams

Most of my freelance work starts with a chore or a lack of visibility. Maybe you copy data between two spreadsheets by hand every day. Maybe you have a robust data feed but no data scientist to analyze it, and you want a simple, interactive dashboard everyone can use. Maybe an off-the-shelf project management tool has too many bells and whistles but somehow still can't do exactly what you want, so you want a simple custom-built alternative.

I've been doing this kind of work since 2020, and seeing my clients' eyes light up the first time an automation runs successfully brings me just as much joy now as it did then!

I initially did most of my work on Upwork, where I've taken on 140 projects for 100 clients since 2021, with five-star reviews and a Top Rated Plus badge. These days, I primarily work directly with clients.

What I build (a few examples)

Automations

For school districts, I've automated the (formerly paper) process of principals' classroom observations: principals fill out a simple Google Form, teachers get their results in a private spreadsheet the next morning, and principals and superintendents can track every result in one place. For an online retailer, I wrote code that pulls every Square order into a Google Sheet for billing, with a simple, filter-ready summary view on top. I've even automated a "mail merge" into Google Slides: a fully customized slide deck for every row of a Google Sheet!

Workflow tools

Everyone works differently, and sometimes that means customizing your way to the right solution. For a school district, I custom-built an end-to-end project management tool entirely within the Google Suite: Google Forms for project submission, Docs and Sheets for tracking, automated Calendar events and email reminders, and a Data Studio dashboard for reporting. And a gym I work with was recording every workout on paper, so I built them a custom web app on a tablet with exactly the features their coaches needed to track workouts digitally.

Dashboards

One office wanted some friendly competition: teams entered their numbers from their phones, and a Data Studio dashboard on an office screen showed which team led on profit that day! For school districts, I've built custom reporting dashboards that let them safely analyze student-level data in aggregate, pulling from files with thousands of rows and hundreds of columns.

AI tools

With Inform 2 Inspire, I've built two conversational analytics tools for California schools. These AI chatbots have full access to large, complex databases, grounded in how they're structured, so they can report metrics, graphs, tables and more. I've also led AI innovation and build-out for two medium-sized companies: one focused on streamlined documentation across hundreds of messy systems, the other on internal workflow tools where AI can automate better than anything deterministic.

What clients say

Oren is the ultimate Google Sheets / spreadsheet ninja... it's genuinely mindblowing what he can do. The most complex of overlapping formulas with conditional rules and logic came to life like magic. And stuff I thought was going to be impossible, it's like he just clicked his fingers and made it happen!

Oren is an outstanding service provider... Along with completing every one of my projects to my specifications, he also provided recommendations based on his technical expertise which saved me time and money. Oren has been my go-to for data and programming support for the past few years and will continue to be for years to come.

Joel Rabinfounder, Inform 2 Inspire

Could not have asked for a better outcome for this project, or a better freelancer! Oren was quick and clear in communication, understood the task at hand and offered helpful suggestions to improve project. He was efficient, personable, and worth every penny.

How a project works

  1. Free first call

Show or tell me what's slowing your team down, or what capabilities you want to unlock. I'll tell you honestly if I don't have the skills for the job!

  2. Written scope

Before I start, we'll make sure I understand the task, and agree on what's in, what's out, the price, and the timeline.

  3. Build and test

Bigger projects might start with a prototype you can react to, then a round or two of fixes once your team uses the tool for real.

  4. Handover

It runs on your systems, and the code is yours. I'm always happy to provide a short video or write-up so you can adjust it without me!

What it costs

I generally work at a fixed price, agreed on before work starts. I'm always happy to discuss reduced rates or pro bono work with nonprofits!

Have a project in mind?

Email me a few lines about it (no need to make it super coherent), and we'll set up a consult call to see if we'd be a good fit. I'll try to get back to you within one business day!
